JULIE! I am so glad you have a blog!!!What awesome times!!! I think your goal for Ogden is a little tepid, though. It should be something like, "Run Ogden in 3:30, then go back and get my friend Cheris and help her finish the last 10K."

I ran my final medium long run this morning with Cheris. Our average pace was 8:51. It's time to taper for Ogden. I'm getting excited. This will be my 7th marathon, but I still feel like I have so much to learn. I think the key to improving my marathon times is going to be adding more training miles before St. George.

I drove to Ogden Friday night with 4 other ladies from our running group.   We spent the night at the Ben Lomond hotel.  It was nice to walk out the hotel door and get on the bus.  Cheris and I started out together.  The pace felt great.  We were right where we wanted to be for the first 10 miles.  At mile 10 we took a bathroom break.   This put us about 2 minutes behind.  At 17 miles we started a big downhill section.  Cheris took off.  She is a much better down hill runner than me.  At mile 18 my stomach started to cramp up.  I have always had bathroom issues on runs longer than 13 miles.  Over the next 6 miles, I made 3 more bathroom stops.   Other than my stomach issues, my body felt great until mile 24.  The last 2 miles I was exhausted.  Peggy and Michelle met me at mile 25 and paced me into the finish.  They were a huge help.  I felt better during this marathon than I ever have.  My recovery has been great.  I have had very little soreness.  This race was a 12 minute PR for me.  (Actually 13 minutes from the actual time on my Garmin.)  And 39 minutes faster than I when I ran this marathon in 2006.

My splits according to Milliseconds:

7 miles in 1:00 (8:36)

13.1 in 1:54 (8:54)

23.5 in 3:23 (8:12)

Final 3.1 in 31:53  (10:15)

Congratulations on a PR and reaching your goal of sub-4:00. I think you have BQ in St. George pretty much in the bag - you just need to show up at the start in the same shape.

However, I would guess that your true potential in the marathon is at least around 3:20 with proper consistent training.

From Peggy on Wed, May 21, 2008 at 13:39:36

I agree with Sasha, Julie. I think you have huge potential to decrease your marathon (and other race) times.

I can't believe you weren't sore! I only ran half the race, and I was sore.

Strength training has a much lesser bang for the buck than just running. Do not cut a run short to strength train. If you have extra time after you've put in all of your miles, strength training is a good idea.

Julie--From all the info I've gleaned from Sasha and Steve, you shouldn't worry about your exact pace, worry more about effort level. On your easy days, run easy enough that you can carry on a conversation about complex issues. As long as you're not gasping for breath and can talk comfortably, you are running your correct pace--and that may vary from run to run depending on factors such as fatigue, stress, etc. So effort level is the way to go.

From Julie on Sun, Jun 01, 2008 at 10:36:16

Thanks Cheryl. That's great to know. We had no problem having a conversation, so the pace was right on.

I went into this race not really knowing what time to expect.  I had been having shin pain and my left ankle had hurt all week.  The morning of the race, the pain was gone.  This was a very small race.  Within a few minutes I passed several people who started out too fast.   I ended up being the first female finisher and about 6th place overall.  I'm jealous of all you fast people who get to finish in the front of the big races.  It was such a great feeling.  My husband also had a great race.  He hasn't been running much, and still came in 2nd place overall with a time of 19:35.  This was a PR for me.

This was a really fun race.  When I got there, I did an easy 2 mile warm up.  I was really hoping to place in my age group.  I knew I had a chance with most of my running group running the Wasatch Back relay.  I ran the first mile in 7:25, the second in 7:24, and the third in 7:12.  I gave it everything I had.  I was trailing behind a lady for the first 2.5 miles.  When we turned onto the final stretch, I passed her.  That was my goal from the beginning.  I didn't get passed after the first mile.  I think the only girls to beat me were a lot younger.  After the race I ran an easy 2 miles.  I got a medal and a $10 gift card to Wasatch Running.

Thanks Michelle. My kids are 15, 13 and 9. My older two were gone to camp this week, but are now home. By the way, I love reading your blog. You really inspire me.

We met at Michelle's house for our Monday run.  I ended up running with Lisa the whole time.  She is a faster runner than I am, so I may have pushed it a little too much.  Lisa had to leave for work, so we ended the run at 7 miles.   I went home and ran another slow 2.4 miles on my own.   Average pace for the first 7 miles was 8:13.  Average pace overall 8:31.

I met with the group at Bingham this morning.   I ran a 3 mile warm up in 26 minutes.  Way to fast.  Then we ran 6 miles with 1/2 mile repeats at 10k pace with about a 1/2 mile recovery in between.  Then I ran a 1.4 mile cool down with Cheris and Michelle.  Average pace for the 10.4 miles was 8:32.  My legs felt a little tired during the run.

Nice running... Pushing the pace while tired is determination. Sometimes it's the tired days where we push that shows good results on race day.

From Julie on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 17:52:06

Thanks Wheakory. That sounds good to me. I'm running a 10k this Friday and I would love to see some good results. I'm going to force myself to slow it down the next two days.

From wheakory on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 18:12:51

Ya your really don't need to push it. I would do about 8 x 100m strides tomorrow at the end of your easy run just to get a good turn over tune-up for the race. Than of course do a good warm-up before the race to get the blood flowing in the muscles. Then rip it up!

From Julie on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 22:31:00

I appreciate any advice you can give me. The strides are a great idea. I am planning on running 10 miles tomorrow. How many miles do you think I should run on Thursday, the day before the race?

From Shauna on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 22:53:54

Sounds like a tough workout: great job! Good luck in your 10k on Friday!

From wheakory on Wed, Jul 02, 2008 at 00:59:44

I would probably do 3 to 5 miles at an easy pace, or even take the day off. Because you really want fresh legs for the race. But I would make sure you do a good warmup, and go at race pace for about 200m just to get the muscles warmed up about 10 -15 minutes before the race starts. It's good to warmup right before the race starts like doing a mile 1 or 2 then 200m at race pace or a 1 minute at race pace.

Thats what I usually do, because you do want to start out at race pace without having even warmed up.

From Julie on Wed, Jul 02, 2008 at 18:13:55

Shauna- Thanks for the comment. Are you planning on racing Friday? It looks like we both have the same goal for St. George this year. I can't wait to see how you do.

Wheakory- Thank you so much for the great advice. I will definitely try it.

This was a PR by almost 3 minutes at this same race last year.   Several of us from the running group met at 5:45 to help with the registrations.  I was a little worried that we wouldn't get to warm up before the race.  It turned out ok.  I couldn't see Michelle M. or Cheris at the start.  I started out with Lynette and Michelle N.   My mile splits were 7:17, 7:20, 7:26, 7:41, 7:48, 7:21 and 6:41 for the final .20.  It was fun to see so many familiar faces.  Our running group did great.  Peggy took 1st, Lynette took 3rd, and Jessica took 4th place overall.  In my age group, Michelle M. took 1st, I took 2nd and Cheris took 3rd.  (That is if you don't count Peggy and the 2nd place overall female in our age group.) Cheryl, Nancy, Debbie and Michelle N. placed in their age groups as well.  Michelle M. came flying past me in the last mile.  It makes me wonder if I had started out slower could I have finished faster?  My husband Jerry did great and finished in 41 minutes.  It was very windy and hot.   This race is not the easiest so I am very happy with my time.

Then we ran the 2.4 mile route again, this time at 1/2 marathon pace. Which today was a 7:35 pace. It felt really good. My sister Angela came today. Back at the track, I ran 1 more mile. I thought I had to rush home to get my daughter back to the high school for registration. Turns out she went with a friend. Which is nice because it gives me a chance to blog before I head off to work.

Hey---we were at the registration as well today! Is your daughter a sophomore?? Be glad she went with a friend, it was nuts and took 2 hours!

Great workout. You guys are fast! A 7:35 for two miles might just kill me!

From Julie on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 18:34:38

Peggy, Thanks for the fun run today. I will tell Angela hi.

Kelli, You are such a good mom. I felt guilty not going with her. But, it was nice for her to not feel rushed. She is a sophomore. Is your daughter? She is my oldest. I don't feel old enough to have a daughter that age.

From Jody on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 19:03:30

It was great to meet you today! You did an awesome job!

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 23:00:45

I actually only went because she wanted me to! She clung to me like I was her best friend. She has been at a charter school since 6th grade so she does not know many people. She is, however, very outgoing so she will do fine! She saw a ton of people from our old neighborhood and was feeling better by the minute! She also made the soccer team, so she has some friends that way! We just spent the last 4 hours watching soccer at Riverton HS, in fact! That is gonna suck up a lot of my time.

Yes, mine is a sophmore as well AND my oldest! I KNOW I am not old enough. My husabnd tells people we started when we were 12, and that is how i feel. I am way too young to deal with teenager stuff!

I met the group at the SJ soccer fields for our 3 5k's workout.  The first one was kind of a fast warm up with Michelle N.  Average pace 8:17.  The second I ran mostly with Walter at nearly my recent 5k pace.  Which was probably his easy easy pace.  Average pace 7:35.  For the last one I ran with Michelle until I took a pit stop.  So I ran the last 2 miles by myself.  Then a few of us ran one more mile to cool down.  Average for the last 4 miles 8:32.  It was fun to have lots of new runners join us today.

I am enjoying seeing all of your hard work. I do think that you could get some downhill training benefit from an occasional decline run on the treadmill, if you can stand it.

I have been hunting for your Blog since Thursday! Anyway, great run that day and it was really nice to meet you! Two more weeks until we become official mothers of HS children. That scares me!!!

Your PR's over there to the left are GREAT!!!

From Julie on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 16:35:19

Kelli, It was nice to meet you. I hope you can come again. The thought of having a kid in HS scares me too. I think I am most nervous for her to drive. She is taking the test to get her permit next week. And the thought of her dating in few months....

Paul(Riverton) is in the same boat as us. He has a son their age. Maybe his son can be a spy for us.

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 16:43:25

A spy---good idea!

We were headed off to go get the permit as well (she has been studying the last month for it) and realized we can not find her birth certificate anywhere. So, I have to order a new one and wait for it to come first! Darn.

Does it not scare you to death how they do Driver Ed now? We have to teach them to drive first? Makes no sense. That will for sure be my husband's job. My daughter is 4'11 (and a half)" and we have a suburban. Look out Riverton and Herriman!

We had a great run today.  Michelle and I met Angela again at the Albertsons in Draper.  We ran up 12300 S. and then to Wasatch Blvd.  Angela only wanted to run 14, so we turned around at 7miles and went back.  Then Michelle and I got on the Porter Rockwell trail.  We went out 3 miles and back.  Miles 14-17 felt hard.  When we turned around at mile 17 I felt so much better.  I think it is a mental thing for me.  We pushed ourselves hard at the end. The last mile was 7:45.  We finished in 2:46.  Average pace 8:20.  That was my fastest 20 miles ever.  I came home and took an ice bath for 20 minutes.  I feel really good.   I know we could've gone another 6 miles if we had to.

I got up at 3:55 this morning.  I drove down to race with Michelle N., Cheris, and Michelle M.  Michelle and I lined up next to Jody at the start.  We thought we were in a good position until everone on the last buses lined up right in front of us.  The first mile was horrible.  We could barely move and waisted lots of energy trying to get around slow runners.    My garmin lost it's signal, so I'm not sure on my mile splits.   The ones I remember were:

The first 5k about 22:40

10k in 44: something

10 miles in 1:11

I took gu at miles 3 and 10.  I only had water at the aid stations.

My actual finish time from my watch was 1:34:56.  Exactly 4 minutes faster than last year.  Thanks Michelle for being there with me those last 3 miles.  We did it.  I am so excited.  Sasha's prediction chart was right on from my Deseret News 10k time.  That gives me some confidence for St. George.

Great job to all of you that ran today.  Everyone we talked to did great.

Awesome job. Your splits were right on with mine from Friday am. We could have been running buddies too. I was at 1:11 at mile 10 and 44 something at my 10k. That is so weird but glad to know I have some people out there to run with at St. George. Wish you lived in Pleasant Grove. You will definitely qualify at St. George. The old rule of thumb was double the half and add 10 to 15 minutes. So there you go. Happy 20 miler!!

Hi Julie. Read under the comment in my blog. I answered your question. Also have you heard of Yasso 800s? It is from Bob Yasso who was an elite runner. He said if you run an 800 in 3:20 (or whatever the time) and can repeat it for 10 times then you can run a marathon in that time(3:20). From your average it looks like you will be under 3:30 by a good margin. Yahoo!!!!

Great run Julie! Just run tomorrow at a comfortable but slow pace and itll shake off the heaviness you felt today. I think the Heaviness is from taking some of those hills with you. Your supposed to leave them there after you run up them. Just like golf. Replace your divits. Lol Keep up the good work.

It's probably too late for me to add this comment, but, just for the record, here's my two cents. I'm starting to feel like a really slow run is better than a day off. It gets your legs moving, lets them work out some of the lactic acid, and your heart still gets a little bit of work. And, you feel like you've done something. But really slow is the key. 9:30 to 10:00 minute pace is good for me.

Never ran this one so the unknown is affecting me. I tried to take it easy today but did do 2x800 to see if I can. How are you guys doing your half? Is it hilly in Riverton? Have a good run. Went running at 7am today and FROZE. I guess it is long-sleeved tech shirt weather at the race start.

I met Angela, Peggy, Cheris and Michelle M. at 5:00 am so we could get in 3 extra miles before the big 3 x 5k workout.  My legs were still heavy.  Maybe everyone feels like this and I'm just a complainer.  The first 3 miles we tried to take a little easier so Michelle N. could warm up a little.

3.1 miles in 25:05 (average pace 8:00) Sorry Michelle, not much of a warm up.

3.0 miles in 23:16 (average pace 7:43)

3.0 miles in 22:58 (average pace 7:36)

I had to run straight to my car to get home for my kids.  So no cool down.  I felt like it was a great work out.

You are great to run today. I was so tired and sore and really didn't want to but finally convinced myself to go bike.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:02:24

I told Jerry to tell you to do some -3.0 decline runs at the treadmills at the gym to train for SGM, but I'll tell you myself too. I find they have really helped prepare me for the downhills, and you can hold a faster pace than you would on a flat at the same effort, so they make great recovery runs too.

You are doing great.

From julie on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:07:19

Thanks Paul. That is a great idea for my recovery runs. I will for sure try that next week.

I agree with Jody... 8 miles on the dreadmill - yikes! I can run happily (if not strong) for 4 hours out on the roads but put me on the machine and I'll be whining within 20 minutes. Good for you!

What a fun run today.  Cheryl put together a little half marathon for our group.  We had a great turn out of about 18 people.  Michelle's husband Jared was our water boy.  It was so nice to not have to carry our water.  And I think it gave us something to look forward to.  I warmed up for about 3 miles before we started.  Then cooled down for .5 miles before rushing off to my son's football game.

The first 4 to 5 miles were mostly uphill.  My miles splits were 8:28, 8:38, 9:03, 8:34, 7:59, 7:25, 7:38, 8:16, 7:09, 7:39, 7:24, 7:57, and 7:32.  Overall time 1:44. (pace 7:59)

I ran mostly with Angela and Michelle.  I felt pretty good the whole time.  I think I may be sore tomorrow.

Wow, great run, and 80 miles this week!! Never would I have thought before this year that 80 miles was doable, that you could do that and still be walking around after. You guys are going to tear up SGM this year. 3:30 may be too unambitious, sub 3:30 is more likely.

From Michelle N. on Sat, Sep 06, 2008 at 19:04:29

I ran 8 miles on the treadmill this morning.  I would much rather run outside, but I get nervous running alone now that it is so dark.  I actually really enjoyed my run today.  I watched 13 going on 30.  I felt good and the time went by fast.  Average pace 9:20 with a 1% incline.   My right quad is still  a little sore.  At work today, I felt like I might be getting a sore throat.  I better take my vitamins and get lots of rest.

Met the BBK group at Bingham.  We ran a 2.5 mile warm up.  Then about 1/2 of us went to the nice soft brand new Bingham track.  Peggy had us run 4x600's, then 1x1200, then 2x600's all with a 400 recovery.  Then I had to leave.  I love the track.  I should do that more often.  I didn't really pay attention to my speed, but I felt like I pushed it pretty hard.  I knew I was running the recovery parts too fast when I started chatching up to Peggy on them.  Of course on the speed part, I was way behind her.   I came home and got 2 kids off to school. Then I ran 1.5 more miles on the treadmill.

From JulieC on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 19:09:59

Julie- I didn't know treadmills go downhill. Is this on the newer models? I rarely treadmill run but did last week at the PG rec center where they have all new equipment. Awesome cushioning even at 9 mph. But downhill would have been better.

From Julie on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 22:35:27

Thanks for the comments. It was fun Cheryl. I still need to try the downhill 5k that you do. I think I'll try that next week.

Julie- The treadmills that are at my gym are about 2 years old. I have a treadmill at home, but it feels so hard compared to the ones at the gym. I was surprised at how sore my hips were today after running that downhill. I'm more sore than I was after running Hobble Creek.

From erico on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 12:25:21

Julie, does the treadmill actually have a negative grade or is it a technique you are applying? I would be interested in knowing more about this.

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 22:52:02

The treadmills at my gym have a negative grade, but I have never tried it. I am going to on Monday just to see what it feels like. It has always kind of scared me!

I can not believe anyone can say time flies by on a treadmill. There must be something wrong with me!

I'M GOING TO BOSTON!!!!!  What a great day.  I was hoping for a 3:30, but I am thrilled with my time.  The weather was horrible.  It was raining and there was a headwind for most of the race.  Angela and I couldn't find Michelle N, Michelle M, or Cheris at the start.  I was so bummed.  I really wanted to start with them.  We lined up near the 3:30 pace group, but it was so dark we lost them right after the start.  I saw the girls on Veyo.  I was so excited to see them.   I took 2 bathroom breaks at just after the 5 mile mark and just before 13.

 My splits were 8:29, 8:16, 7:51, 7:46, 7:55, 8:15, 7:28, 8:55, 8:31, 8:26, 8:38, 8:43, 8:25, 8:05, 7:45, 7:40, 7:57, 8:09, 8:41, 8:07, 7:43, 8:30, 8:20, 8:03, 8:46, 8:36 and 2:10.

My sister Angela was wonderful.  Her only goal was to help me qualify for Boston.  She had only been running 2 sometimes 3 times a week to train.  She was able to stay with me until just after mile 23.  I was so happy to have her with me that whole time.  I ended up finishing about 2 minutes before her.  Michelle caught up to me at mile 25 and she looked great.  She really helped push me that last mile.  I had a 1/2 a gu at mile 5, 1/2 a gu at mile 7, gu at 13, gu at 19, and then I had a Jolly Rancher at mile 22.  I drank gatorade at the stops that I didn't gu.  I didn't have anything to drink the last 4 miles.  I never hit the wall.  The extra miles in training made a huge difference.

Everyone from our running group did great.  I feel so lucky to have such a great group of friends to run with.

WOW! I am so happy after yesterday! Maybe just to be dry! No, I just think everyone managed to have a great day, despite the terrible conditions. I wish we could have started out with you guys, it was frustrating not being able to find everyone, but I'm glad we met up with you at Veyo--that was our bright spot of that bleak mile, totally uphill, into the wind and pouring and rain. I thought you guys looked like superheroes flying up the hill in your trash bags. What a day! Congratulations on your awesome time! Boston!!!

I ran 5 easy miles this morning in the wind.  After running St. George, todays 7 MPH winds didn't seem all that bad.  Everything feels great.  I am so surprised that I have had very little soreness.   I was thinking today of what a great summer this has been.  I have been running for 7 years.  This year I have set PR's in every race distance.  I hope I have more PR's left in me.

Way to go Julie. You are doing great again. I hope I get out there today. Oh, and you do have PR's left in you. After the conditions Saturday, I guarentee you'll have a marathon PR next year.

From Jody on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 09:57:44

Great job getting back out there. I agree with Michelle, many more PR's to come.

From Cheryl on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 12:12:40

I agree, you have lots of PRs left in you. You have only just begun to run great times! And remember, I PR'ed at St. George last year at the ripe old age of 50, so you definitely have many great races left.

Kelli,

The guys in the picture are the band Slaughter. The guy between Angela and me is the lead singer Mark. He was a hottie in the 80's.

I'm sorry Ashly didn't pass her test. I've been meaning to ask you. She is so close. I bet she gets it next time.

Walter,

Good guess. You remember Slaughter don't you? Up all night, sleep all day.

I am aghast! You caught me off guard. If it was Duran Duran or Thompson Twins, then that would have been a different story.

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 14:29:42

Slaughter, huh? How did you get pictures with them???

From Michelle N. on Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 17:07:45

I will answer for Julie because she doesn't check her blog nearly as much as I do:)

Her husband put on some concerts last year. Slaughter was one of them so we got to go backstage. Jared took the picture of them and then they took one of us with them. I was bummed we didn't have one all together. You wouldn't think it but Julie and me are quite the rockers:) We've been to lots of concerts. Crue Fest being the best one. I've actually seen Slaughter in concert 4 times but that was the first time I'd actually me them. I was SOOOO in love with Mark Slaughter back in the day. He's kind of old looking now.

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 17:16:47

Isn't her husband a fireman??? How did he put the concerts on?

I was a rocker as a teenager, but I have gotten old far before my time and can not handle it so much any more! I do like rap, but prefer FM100! Call me granny. It is funny becasue my daughter recently discovered Poison and loves them and they were one of my favorites (along with Guns n Roses---my very most favorite). I used to have a HUGE poster of Brett Michaels on my wall when I was in junior high.

From Michelle N. on Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 17:20:23

Yes her hubby is a fireman but he also plays the drums (very well I might add) and was playing in a Motley Crue cover band and some how got into promoting concerts. We also went to Poison last year and he promoted the after party at Club 90 and they got to go through his tour bus with Bret. I was soooo jealous because we went home and went to bed:(

I actually really do love Greenday's music. They are great to run to. I'll have to change out my picture soon with another band picture to see if you can guess who it is. Sorry it's not Duran Duran or Thompson Twins. Have you ever been to Liquid Joes? There is band there called the Spazmatics. They play all that kind of 80's music. It's really fun if you can stand the stinky smoke smell.

Way to keep it up. I've been slacking, glad you haven't.

I've also meant to comment that I never realized how tall Slaughter is.

From peggy on Wed, Dec 03, 2008 at 11:20:48

RivertonPaul - did you know that was Slaughter, or did someone tell you? I had to ask Julie who it was, so I'm impressed if you just knew by looking.

Julie - glad you felt good today. It always seems like you're doing well.

From Julie on Wed, Dec 03, 2008 at 19:41:42

Paul- After all the miles you put in this past summer, you deserve to slack a little. I think Slaughter just looks tall because I am so short.

Peggy- I love that you have been running slower than usual lately. It's been great for me to be able to run with you.

From RivertonPaul on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 10:13:03

Julie,

I was joking about their height, since even Jeff and Jerry make them all look quite short.

Peggy,

I didn't know it was Slaughter, I had asked Jeff at the gym who the group was.

I met Michelle at the gym for a treadmill run.  I found the following workout that someone made on the internet.  It is a Boston Marathon - Newton hills simulator run.  This is my 4th time doing it.  It's a tough workout.  It does seem to get a little easier each time.  I ran the first 10 miles of it.  Some day I may do the whole thing.

 Miles 1-3 at 9:00 pace

Key:
Mile Marker - Incline % - Speed Setting - Pace per mile:
3.0-3.7 - 3% - 7.6 - 7:53
3.7-4.7 - 1% - 7.5 - 8:00 (my marathon goal pace)
4.7-5.0 - 6% - 6.8 - 8:49
5.0-6.4 - 1% - 7.5 - 8:00
6.4-6.8 - 4% - 7.3 - 8:12
6.8-7.4 - 1% - 7.5 - 8:00
7.4-7.8 - 6% - 6.8 - 8:49

"I did the hill schedule two times during the 20 mile run. The first time beginning at mile 3 and the last time at mile 15, when I knew it would really be a challenge.
From mile 7.8-mile 15, I ran between an 8:12 and an 8:19 pace on 0% incline to simulate downhill as much as possible."
This is what the hill workout looked like the 2nd time:

Key:
Mile Marker - Incline % - Speed Setting - Pace per mile:
15.0-15.7 - 3% - 7.6 - 7:53
15.7-16.7 - 1% - 7.5 - 8:00
16.7-17.0 - 6% - 6.8 - 8:49
17.0-18.4 - 1% - 7.5 - 8:00
18.4-18.8 - 4% - 7.3 - 8:12
18.8-19.4 - 1% - 7.5 - 8:00
19.4-19.8 - 6% - 6.9 - 8:41 (I increased the speed a little to push it on this virtual "Heartbreak Hill."
19-8-20.0 - 1% - 7.6 to 7.7 - 7:49-7:53

Great workout. I have a hard time running the treadmill with a 1.0 incline. What races are you planning on running next year?

From julie on Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 23:28:22

Thanks Becca and Barry. It is a tough workout, but it really helps to make the time pass more quickly.

I plan to run Painters 1/2 in January. Then hopefully Boston, Ogden and St. George Marathons. How about you? What races are you planning?

From barry on Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 23:41:55

I was hoping to run the Salt Lake Marathon, Ogden Marathon and maybe the Pocatello Marathon, but i will be running the 1/2 marathon instead of the full Marathon. I really want to run a 1:20 half, before i run a full Marathon. Have you thought about running the Salt Lake Marathon?

From julie on Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 23:57:19

Wow! A 1:20 half would be great. I love half marathons. They are my favorite distance.

I do want to run the Salt Lake Marathon one of these of years. I think it is around the same time as Boston this year.
