Happy New Year!!!  I was too tired this morning to meet the BBK's, so I ran 3 easy treadmill miles.  Then I went with my family to see Marley and Me.

Met the BBK's at the trailhead at 9800 S.  It was Emily's first time running with us.  It was nice getting to talk to her.  We ran on the trail and up into Parkway Palisades and back.  Emily and Michelle M. couldn't get their cars up the icy hill of the parking lot.  We had to push/pull them out.  I was glad I have 4 wheel drive.  It was a good run.

You were awesome today. I felt like POOP! I think that is just normal for me lately! I wish I could have some good days in with the bad ones. Oh well, at least I went, right?

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 18:42:15

I wondered if you were there! I could not tell who anyone was. Great pace for that run, though, wind and all.

From julie on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 19:12:27

Michelle- For feeling like POOP you did great. That wind was a killer. You have been so consistant. I'm glad you came.

Kelli- Thanks. We did have a big group today. I couldn't tell who was there either. One of these days we really need to run together. We could share lots teen-ager stories.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 19:15:31

OH!!! Ashly finally got her learner's permit on December 31st after the 6th try!! She is the SCARIEST driver I have ever seen. She is not quite 5 feet tall and we only have a Suburban. She can not even see. She keeps begging to drive, but it freaks me out!

I will have some stories very soon---she will be 16 in 6 days. Dating scares me more than driving!

Have a good day!

From julie on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 at 19:26:28

Yea!!! I'm so glad she passed. I make Jerry take Taylor driving. I get so nervous that I make her nervous. It's not good. We have a little Honda that she drives. She hates driving our big Tahoe.

I agree about the dating. She turns 16 next month.

Met the BBK's to run the soon to be Riverton 1/2 marathon course.  We had a great turn out.  We even got Riverton Paul to brave the cold and run with us.  It was fun chatting with Teena, Paul and Cal for several miles.  There were a few times I felt pretty tired and wanted to slow down, but overall I felt pretty good.  Thanks Teena for sticking with me.  Average pace 8:33.

Julie,

I will run with you whenever!! In fact, I just posted that I needed to talk you into running with me more. The times you felt pretty tired were the exact times that I was feeling it (I think). So don't thank me ... it worked out perfectly. Thanks for the fun conversation and reminding me that you hit the downhill only after the uphill! You are great!

From Teena on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 13:06:46

btw, when I said the "exact times I was feeling it," I meant "feeling tired" not "feeling it -- as in feeling good." My upper legs felt crazy tired. I think part of it was that we were running out of glycogen and not taking any in. We should have drank more and took a gu (at least I think I should of). I think our reserves were pretty much used up.

From Michelle N. on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 13:07:38

You guys were awesome. I wish I could've stayed with you guys but when nature calls...

From Julie on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 13:24:10

Teena, I agree we should have drank more. I had a gu at about mile 8 and it did seem to help. I will run with you anytime. I really enjoyed it.

Michelle, I know you were right behind us for a long time. When you gotta go you gotta go.

From Jody on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 15:25:15

You did awesome today! I knew there was no way I could keep up! You were gone by the time we finished so I didn't get to tell you how great you did!

From Kelli on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 17:35:19

Yeah, you must have been in a hurry (or just really cold!!) Great job today! And, I have said it a million times, I have to cruise up the hills because I run really slow down the hills. If I do not push it as fast as i can, I quit and walk. It is a strange phenomenon. Now, hill repeats, that is an entirely different story! 1 hill--great, more than 1---NO WAY!

Ashly is out driving with Scott right now, so let's hope that none of you guys are out there. It is not safe for the next hour!!!

From JulieC on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 18:32:58

Hey saw your awesome mileage on the board!! I finally made over 40 (even slightly over 45, a first for me). You are my exemplar. I got to find strategic ways to increase my mileage now that I work fulltime nights. You are doing awesome!!! Are you doing Painter's? I work three nights in a row before it so I am opting out and going skiing instead after a full nights sleep.

From Julie on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 20:44:08

Jody- Thanks. You guys weren't far behind at all. I just got lucky and didn't have to make any stops.

Kelli- You really should look for a race that has tons of uphill. I think there is one in Idaho. Hobie something or other. I thought I was good on the uphill until I saw you. There is no way I could keep up.

So is your stomach in knots waiting for Ashly to get home? Taylor has 20 hours of driving in and I still get sick to stomach waiting every time she and Jerry go out. I hope it gets better.

Julie- It's so good to hear from you. Great job getting your miles in. I don't how you do it working nights. You are amazing. I am planning on running Painter's. I wish you were. I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to. What races are you doing this year?

Good luck in Painter's. I am jealous but since I am working nights I have not been the most present mom so I got to go skiing with the family and somehow get in my miles. You'll do great. Hope the weather is great. It should be better than here and better than the SGM for sure. I plan on running Antelope Island 50k (March 28) (30miles), awesome race and well run. Skipping Moab. A race in DC (two to choose from the beginning of June), July 4th and 24th runs down here, Provo River Half, Hobble, and SGM. Any others that fit my crazy schedule. If you hear of any let me know. Once again, KICK BUTT!!

Julie, I hope you have a great time skiing. I'm so excited for the warmer weather. I'm sure I'll be running a couple of the same races. We'll have to meet up.

That is an oldie, but I remember being freaked out about the scissors for a while after watching it. I couldn't be in a room with scissors out. Something like that, yet I don't remember much more than it freaked me out. Try watching "Spirit of the Marathon", have you seen it? I heard it is awesome, great motivator, yet I haven't broken down and bought it on line yet (cost $25 Allie told me on the blog).

I drove down with Michelle N., Cheris, Michelle M., Kris and Dean.    We stayed at the Comfort Inn which made it very easy to walk to and from the race.

I started out with Michelle and Teena.  My plan was to start out slower and pick up the pace as the race went on.  That didn't happen.  I went out too fast for me and ran out of gas at mile 7.  I said goodbye to my friends.  I decided to take my second gu at mile 7.7.  I think that is what caused me to get sick.  I ended up using the POP at the 10 mile water station.  It was so frustrating to get passed by so many people those last 5 miles.   Jody was so sweet and tried to pull me along, but I couldn't do it.  I finished 6 minutes slower this year than last year.  Anyway, it was a fun weekend.  I'm done with my runner's series races.  YEA!!!!

My garmin showed the distance as 13.27, so my splits are probably not correct.  Here they are anyway.    8:05, 8:00, 7:53, 7:49, 8:06, 7:32, 7:51, 7:59, 8:29, 8:16, 10:06 (bathroom break), 8:41, and 8:49.

I think you did great! I am telling you, there is something up with those GU's! After St George, I will never have a GU again! EVER!

Your splits look pretty good, actually! Potty breaks cost you some and that stinks! I think you should get to stop time for those! It is not fair.

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 21:40:28

Sorry you had a less-than-ideal day. It seems especially discouraging since you essentially ran the same time for the Riverton course on the training run the week before, but without the dreaded potty stop (thanks for being such good company that day). Looking back, perhaps we should have slowed the pace more so you could have tapered better for Painters. Oh, well, live and learn. In any event, others are reporting he course was short last year.

i am curious about this newton hills treadmill run. what does it consist of? i have a tradmill hill workout i do occasionally where you run in 10 min. segments, increasing the incline to 6-7% the last two min. of the segment, then increase the speed, lower the incline, and start another 10 min. set. is this the same?? sorry if that was confusing...just curious!

Met the BBK's at the Riverfront parking lot.  After the warm up, Peggy had us do a crazy hard hill workout.  It was tough and I'm tired but I'm excited to start our speed workouts again.  I was going to take the 30 second hill sprints easy until Dean challenged me.  I couldn't just let him go.  I realized I need someone to push me like that.  I give up too easy.

Push ups 14,14,10,10,22.  100 crunches.

Yes, Taylor is going to the dance. It will be her first date. She is so excited. Is your daughter going?

She is going, it will be her first date as well. I am so looking forward to this whole thing of staying up late to hear all about it!

So, I asked Ashly what she is supposed to wear and she just said a dress. She does not know if it is formal or semi-formal or what. Do you know?

Julie, I ran Boston in 2006 and had a blast. Boston is a great town and much smaller than I thought so it is easy to walk around and/or take the "T". Ideas on things to do:

Walk Freedom Trail

Visit Boston Common

Visit Fanueil Hall

Eat Italian food (and desserts) in the North End

Visit JFK Library

Take Duck Boat tour

Visit Expo (at least once!)

Visit the Trinity church in Copley Square

Plus much more depending on interest, time and transportation and where you are staying.

Love the 80's bands (my era as well). In fact, I believe we are going to see Def Leppard, Cheap Trick and Posion this August in SLC! Rock on!

From Julie on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 20:44:23 from 63.230.16.206

Thanks Jeff. Those are some great ideas. I believe we are staying at a hotel near the finish line. So we should be close to everything.

I would love to see Def Leppard. Crue Fest is coming again this summer too. We haven't decided if we'll go to either concert yet.

From jtshad on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 09:48:46 from 204.134.132.225

Lots of neat things to do. We are staying about 1M from the finish (Hilton Finanacial district) but everything in downtown is in walking distance.

Keep up the great training.

I was born in Massachusettes just outside of Boston (lived there until I was five then grew up in New Hampshire). Lots to do in the city. Definitely do the list mentioned above and if you can, go to the Harbor to see the Ocean. Prettier beaches as you drive towards Cape Cod (an hours drive, where my family lives), now that would be the best place I would recommend but not very warm there in April (hit or miss), flowers don't blume there until May. I am too jealous. Maybe I should just sign up and go. I ran it in 1996. You will love it.

From peej on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 16:16:06 from 64.193.228.246

Jules is that Slaughter on your pic, I had 3 and a half wonderful hours of listening to "Hair Nation" on satalite radio Saturday night (driving home from St. George). I named every band but 2, my kids were dying laughing, so I had to explain that the 80's had the greatest hair bands ever. In fact, I think I'm going to rock out to some Poison right now! Aint lookin for nothin.......

From Julie on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 21:46:04 from 63.230.16.206

Michelle- I am crazy. That's why we get along so well.

Peej- Congrats on your race. You did great. I'm so impressed that you recognized Slaughter. The 80's music was the best. Even my 16 year old daughter thinks the music was better then.

Burt- You're good. I can almost hear you singing that.:)

From peej on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:41:20 from 64.193.228.246

Well, I am a little embarassed that I had to ask, but in my defense, they are a little older. Seriously, my kids had no idea there were bands called Krokus, Dokken, LA Guns. Even my wife was blown away at my superior hair band knowledge, and she was right there with me in the 80's. She listened to HoJo and stuff like that, and I did tell her that I listened to it too, but I listened to EVERYTHING!

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:51:23 from 68.76.197.194

Mark Slaughter was the nephew of a member of our stake presidency when I was in high school. True story. I remember asking his daughter, "Is Slaughter really your cousin?" - "Yeah, but he's changed a lot." Hahahaha!

From Michelle N. on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:55:35 from 75.162.237.156

Old Marky was a babe back in the day! He is looking a little haggard these days. I was with Julie at that concert (I took the pic) and I can believe that he was raised a mormon boy. He seems really nice. He doesn't ever get too rowdy during the concerts. I have seen him 4 (yes 4) times.

From peej on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 13:05:23 from 64.193.228.246

Well, Shell, I have seen Ratt, Poison, Cinderella 6 times each. Motley Crue 3 times, Van Halen 3 times, Scorpions once. I'm tellin ya here and now 80's hair bands frickin rule!!!!!!!!! Did I mention Bon Jovi 2 times.

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 13:08:38 from 68.76.197.194

Was he raised Mormon? I'm not sure about that. Anyway, who's better - Slaughter or Cinderella? It's gonna be a long cold winter...long cold winter without your lo-ove... I vote for Cinderella, but it's close.

From Julie on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 20:46:29 from 63.230.16.206

Wow CJ, you have seen a lot of concerts. I've actually been backstage with Slaughter, LA Guns, Dokken, Great White, Warrant, and Firehouse. Jerry and I even got to talk to Bret Michaels in his trailor. So I beat you. I'm really not a groupie. Jerry is a much bigger "hair band" fan than I am. It was fun though. Garth Brooks and Bon Jovi are my all time favorite singers/bands.

Burt- Cinderella did have some pretty good ballads, but Slaughter is better. Mark Slaughter has a cousin that lives right behind me. Small world.

Michelle- You are an excellent photographer. I wish you were in the picture.

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 21:03:05 from 98.167.151.26

From Michelle N. on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 22:32:32 from 75.162.237.156

Well CJ, lets see, Crue twice, Poison twice, Van Halen 4, Chili Peppers, Metallica, AC/DC, oh and Hillary Duff! And many more!!! Most of my concerts have been 80's bands. I was raised with the crazy brothers that loved that music. Except Spe of course:) Maxwell jump! Yes, I thought it said Maxell jump instead of might as well jump in VH-jump. My brothers will still call me maxwell. What can I say, I was 8!

After being sick this past week I wasn't sure what to expect today.  My goal was a 1:44 and I did it.  I decided to call my sister Angela last night to see if she would run with me.  She did and I was so happy to have her with me.  It was only 38 degrees and very windy at the start.  I felt pretty good until about mile 10 and then I could feel my lungs burning.  It was so windy today.  My visor blew off my head and I carried it for 10 miles.   Our running group did awesome.  Out of the top 11 women, 9 of them were from our group.  Walter was first place overall.  My mile splits were 8:00, 7:49, 8:04, 7:52, 7:52, 8:11, 8:03, 8:22, 7:50, 8:18, 7:51, 7:46, 7:37, and :48 for the last .1.

Last night was the 2nd night in a row that I have not been able to sleep.  I finally took some Nyquil  at 12:00 and was able to sleep for a few hours.  I was too tired to run 10 miles this morning.  I ran on the treadmill.  1.5 @ 9:13 pace and 3.5 @ 8:00.

PM:  My 10 year old son wants to start training for a 5k.  So we ran 1.2 easy miles.  He did great.

Sorry about the sleep, I have major sleep issues all of the time!!! It makes life hard when you are tired. Chidren's Benadryl works really well!!

Good running yesterday and today!

From Julie on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 18:41:21 from 216.160.236.43

Thanks Kelli. I will have to try the Benadryl. Does it make you groggy? I had this problem before St. George too. Weird. I don't think I'm over-training, but who knows.

From Kelli on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 18:42:33 from 71.219.100.181

I actually like it because it does not make me groggy. You need to take it about an hour before you want to go to bed, and then relax for that hour. But, it is good stuff! I buy the liquid.

From RAD on Tue, Mar 31, 2009 at 00:18:00 from 67.166.99.8

Julie, I hope you get feeling better soon. I'm so glad I had strep and not flu/cold - because I could do antibiotics! Hope to see you in the morning: rested, better and running. Great job getting out even though you weren't feeling great.

From JulieC on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 12:35:14 from 67.42.250.115

Julie- The problem with benadryl is if you take it midnight it affects your am run. Try taking it early. I actually no longer take it because it stays in me too long. If it seems to do this take just 25mg instead of the 50 that is the usual dose suggested in pill form. You can buy 100 tablets for like 5 dollars of diphenhydramine (benadryl) equate version 50 mg tablets and they break apart easily. Just don't take late at night. However you could try melatonin 1mg (natural hormone present to induce sleep cycles and lacking in sleeplessness, cyclical in most women) and again take a half hour before you usually go to sleep. Do I sound like a nurse yet? Anyway I was the same way the week before SGM last year and stayed far away from benadryl because I took it the year before and was totally a zombie in the marathon. I also recommend a warm bath and a good massage, is your husband willing? PS we should definitely meet at the Ogden Marathon.

From Michelle N. on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 14:06:08 from 75.162.116.100

Julie C-I have the same issue with Benedryl, it stays in me for about 24 hours. I get so groggy. I haven't tried the n=melatonin. I'll have to do that. The night before Painters 1/2 Julie and I both took 1/2 of an Ambien (I usually feel pretty refreshed when I wake up) and I woke up around 2:00 AM to Julie snowboarding next to me in bed. I was out of it so went back to sleep but we had a good laugh in the morning.

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 02, 2009 at 14:22:41 from 155.101.221.77

Jeff- Thanks. How much of a taper do you think I should do? I've been running about 60 miles a week. Do you think 40 miles this week and maybe 15 miles the week of the marathon? Any advice you can give me would be great.

Rachel- I'm glad I wasn't the only one crazy enough to run in that weather. Good job getting your run in too.

Nancy- Thanks for the comment. It's weird how quicky the weather changes here. Yesterday was a blizzard and today it's 55 and sunny. That's Utah for us.

Hey lysa. We start at the bottom of this street that is a 1/2 mile long and has some good hills in it. So today we ran hard all the way up and then recovered on a flat section. Then we ran down hard again and recover on a flat section again. Then we repeated that again up and down. Does that make sense? Sorry I'm not very good explaining things.

I decided to try a marathon simulated run this morning and it worked out pretty well.   I ran from my house down to the trail until I hit 6 miles and back.  The weather was prefect running weather.  It was about 44 degrees with some light rain.  I ran the first 2 miles slow, then picked up the pace averaging 8:30 for the entire run.  I felt good but was tired for most of the day.  My plan is to start a 2 week taper after my long run this Saturday.  I'm not sure how far I should go.  Any suggestions would be apprectiated.

Yes. I am running Ogden too. I wish I could watch you finish, but I will be way behind you.

From JulieC on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 09:04:07 from 65.103.228.82

I would suggest 14 to 15 miles or less since hey you just ran a marathon, your body won't forget so soon!! I think you need a slight recovery moment that is why you were so fatigued, your muscles are still healing. Try some Yoga :)

From Julie on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 17:16:05 from 63.225.233.154

Thanks Julie. Great advice. I think I will run 14. I've never done my last 20+ miler four weeks before a marathon. It makes me nervous, but I'm sure it can work. The yoga is a great idea.

I would not overtaper -- just cut back the miles you do, but I wouldn't cut out too many days of running alltogether.

From Julie on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 19:25:28 from 63.230.30.37

Thanks Paul. That's the kind of advice I really need. How many miles do you think I should run Saturday?

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 13:16:16 from 67.42.27.114

If I were you would run between 12 and 14, but only if you don't feel any nagging soreness.

From Julie on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 17:08:42 from 63.225.233.154

Thanks. I'm thinking 14 sounds good. I ran 12 the other day and felt great, but my legs were pretty tired after. I haven't had any soreness since right after the marathon. If you have any other advice, feel free to comment.

Julie- Yes, that was my last long run. I think I will run 10 on Saturday. Enjoy your taper.

Nancy- That will be fun to run with your daughters. Yes, I am running the marathon. Maybe I'll see you at the end if you guys are still hanging out.

Michelle- Thanks. I really wish you could run it with me. It won't be the same without you.

Teena- It was a great nap. I wish I could do that more often.

Kelli- Some of the others ran 8. I was just happy to not have to run the whole 14 by myself. Your run Saturday was much more impressive than mine. You are going to have a great race. You are way more observant than me. I didn't even notice Michelle said Boston. :)

From Bonnie on Wed, May 06, 2009 at 22:23:35 from 71.210.108.76

Julie - you are very close, with your leg speed you are right on the verge ... I am thinking that your Boston "training run" will help you immensely for Ogden, I can't wait to see how you do. The most important thing (in my opinion) is to stay healthy training, you are a very smart runner so if you don't make it at Ogden I would be very surprised if you don't make it at St. George this year.

From Kelli on Wed, May 06, 2009 at 22:48:37 from 71.219.98.88

i think it will be a great day for you. you have put in the training, the weather should be near perfect, and the course is beautiful. just relax and enjoy it. best of luck to you!

Race: Ogden Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:02:37
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I'm still trying to figure out what happened.  This was just not my day.  I completely fell apart at mile 14 and pretty much gave up from there.

Miles 1-7 I felt great.  I was right on pace and hit mile 7 in 57:36.

I made a POP just after mile 10.  I lost about 1 1/2 minutes, but still felt great.

I hit the half way point at 1:51:06.  Perfect.  I thought I could for sure get the 3:45 I wanted.

Then a mile later I was done.  I have never wanted to quit so bad in my life.  I mentally just gave up.  I walked, I used the POP many many times and I just didn't care.

The only thing that kept me going was knowing that Michelle was maybe going to be waiting for me at mile 23 to run in with me.  I was so happy to see her I almost cried.  I can not thank her enough.   She is the best friend ever.

I'm guessing that my poor performance was a combination of few things.  Maybe I hadn't recovered from Boston.  Maybe I went out faster than I should have.   I did have an upset stomach for many miles.   And I do not like running by myself for so long.

This was my 10th marathon.  Someday I'll figure this out.

hey great job toughing it out. i agree on the "figuring it out" thing...yesterday was number 14 for me and it ended in complete disaster. i don't think it can be figured out, which is why we keep coming back for more. you still ran well. be proud of your finish! take some time off to recover and you will bounce back. you can definitely break 3:30 at STG. go for it!

From Cheryl on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 14:27:45 from 76.27.66.153

I second what Allie said. Marathons are strange beasts, we never know what is going to happen. 4:02 is a great time considering how you felt. I felt ok during my two Ogden marathons and finished slower than you did. So I think you did great.

From Bonnie on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 15:03:41 from 71.210.108.104

Just a bad race Julie, they happen ... just take a little time to recover and then keep your sights on the next one. I believe that you got some training stimulus from this race, so it was still a positive thing.

You showed a lot of toughness!!

From Michelle N. on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:42:59 from 75.162.247.50

You are so awesome and that time is great considering you did Boston 4 weeks ago. It was also HOT and we aren't used to that! Way to tough it out though. I am so glad I came up to run the last few with you. It was cool to be on the cheering side of running. You will pop back and run SG strong as ever.

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:03:55 from 71.219.69.233

I am sorry you had a tough race Julie. I think it was a very tough course, it mentally through me (and many others) for a loop. And I feel super bad that you had tummy troubles, that is the absolute pits during a race!

I do have to agree---you just ran a marathon 4 weeks ago! That is tough!! You are an awesome runner and so fast, it was just one of those days. And YEAH to Michelle for doing that for you, what a good friend indeed.

So, I am wondering if it ever gets to a point when you have a marathon figured out?? They are so hard.

Now, take a little time off before you jump back into it. come to my house every day and eat cookies instead!

How did your daughter do at BYU?

From MichelleL on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 23:32:20 from 71.219.40.17

Sorry it didn't turn out the way you hoped. It is so hard when you want to quit and have so far to go. You have to have been tougher and become even tougher by sticking with it.

What is POP? I heard Smooth mention it too.

It just wasn't your day ... but still a very respectable time! :)

You know that I think you are amazing!!! (Plus ... how many people do you know that get to hang with Slaughter? :) :) :))

Hope you are having a GREAT day!!!

Way to hang in there ... glad Michelle was there for you. :)

From Walter on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 00:53:57 from 76.27.15.208

Julie, that is difficult to run Ogden so close to Boston. I did it last year and it was hell on me. Dont let it get you down, it was great weather and besides the nasty water everything seemed to go well. It was good to see you up there.

From RAD on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 01:47:41 from 67.166.99.8

Julie, I can't believe you weren't feeling well!! Maybe we should've stuck closer together, then we could've been in pain and misery together :) This is your 10th marathon? DANG!! I think I'm starting to figure out this marathon monster thing...its just that - A MONSTER!! And like Cheryl said, thats why we keep coming back. As horrible as it was you know we'll come back for more and try to conquer the beast, why? That I'm not sure of...but I am sure that you will!! You are such a strong and dedicated runner that I wouldn't expect anything else, and YEA for Michelle to run you in...I was SOOO hoping someone would've for me, but all the people I know that weren't running Ogden all think I run too fast for them, hmmm...they all should've seen me those last 16 miles :)

From jtshad on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 10:15:13 from 204.134.132.225

Way to tough it out and finish. I agree with the others, this was just a bad day. You can try to attribute it to lots of things all of which could have impacted your race (weather, Boston, water, etc.) but it is just another learning experience and a motivator to get the next one. Great mental toughness to persevere!

From peggy on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:14:57 from 71.213.16.115

I echo what everyone else has said. Sometimes we learn the most from the hardest experiences. We'll train hard this summer and be really ready for St. George, and then we'll face that "marathon monster" again!! Josse has a quote from Paula Radcliffe on her blog that I like. "You can't become a winner overnight, or even in a couple of years-it takes time.... You will lose races and you will have to accept that, learn from it and believe that you'll win the next one, knowing that you'll probably lose as well. All the time you have to keep believing that one day you will win." (I copied it) For us, winning is conquering ourselves and getting back out there again and again and again. . .

From peggy on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:15:22 from 71.213.16.115

P.S. - I think you're time is pretty dang good considering how you felt.

I met Michelle in Bluffdale so we could run the 10k route that she is in charge of next month.  My legs were tired so we kept the pace pretty slow.   I was carrying my key in the little pocket in my shorts so Michelle decided to put her keys in my car.  Wouldn't you know it, when we got back to our cars I realized I had lost the key.  I had taken a potty a break a few miles back and the key had fallen out.  So we called Michelle's husband and he brought us a spare.  We drove back to where I had taken the potty break and I found it buried beneath a pile of weeds and tall grassy stuff.  I so lucked out.  Average pace 9:00.

I was thinking the same thing! Next time Walter comes to running group, ask him to tell you the Ragnar/Sasha key story. Pretty funny.

Great job on the run! How is the 10k looking? Hard?? It is called "badlands" so it scares me!

From Michelle N. on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 17:04:11 from 75.162.247.50

Oh the good times:) Actually Kelli, we talked about the Sasha moment and had a good laugh.

Okay, the badlands is the name of the race because they used to do it partially off road. That is until they put me in charge this year and I moved it to the road. The first 2 miles is gradually uphill and then a mile of down and then another 1/4 or so of gradual up and then the rest is flat or down. It is tough at the first but overall, a decent course.

We started with a 1200 (400 recovery), 1000 (300 recovery), 800 (300 recovery), and then a fast 400 followed by an 800 recovery.  (Kelli says these were in the low 7's or mid to high 6's.

Julie you were smokin' fast today! I love running with the group for the same reason! I know my runs wouldn't be as fast or as consistent without all of you pushing me.

Thanks for pulling me along today. It was tough, but we finished and we could still breathe and we were upright!

Glad to hear you felt GREAT!!!

I havn't felt all that great since I've been home from Cancun.   So this wasn't my best race, but I'm happy with my time.  It was fun to be able to volunteer again this year.   I was afraid I wouldn't make to start in time.  We sprinted over and just made it.  I felt decent the whole time, just not fast.  This race is fun because at the turn around you can see all the people ahead and behind you.  I loved seeing all the people from our group.  They did great.  My splits were 7:47, 7:34, 7:34, 7:46, 8:03, 7:30 and 1:07 for the last .2.

I talked my 3 kids into running the 2.2 mile fun run.  They didn't even complain about having to go an hour and 15 minutes early while I helped with the registration.  They had so much fun running.  My daughter Taylor (16) finished in 17:10 and took 3rd overall.  Alex (14) finished in 19:07.  Austin (10) finished in 17:43 and took 2nd in his age group.

It was fun knowing they would be there to cheer me on at the finish.

Good luck at the 10K tomorrow.

Maintain motivation for continuous training is very hard, sometimes you just need a "breather". I was talking with a running friend last night and she is in the same stage of light "burnout". She was planning on TOU marathon but changed to a sooner one to maintain the benefit of her training but run her big race sooner so she can take some downtime. Downtime is part of the training cycle and it is necessary to stay healthy mentally and physically.

I went into this race with low expectations.  I decided I would push hard from the beginning and just hold on as long as I could.  I ended up with a PR by 13 seconds.  I'm so happy with my time.  I think this was just what I needed to get me motivated again.

Michelle picked me up at 4:45 to drive to the start.  We met up with Rachel, Teena, Smooth, Jody and Bec.  I just love these ladies.  They are the reason I run.    When the gun went off I took off.  I didn't even look at my pace.  I just ran by feel and I felt great.  By mile 3 I was feeling tired.  I ran next to Bec for a little bit.  She looked so strong.  I wish I could have kept up with her.  Shortly after that I started running with Tim.  It was great to have someone to push me.  We stayed together until shortly before the finish where he had more of kick left than I did.

That last 1.2 miles were tough.  I wanted to walk so bad.  My splits were:

Todays run was so fun.  I met the BBK's at Bingham.  I got there early and was able to run an extra mile with Peggy, Mike and Michelle M.  We had a large group of people today which always makes it fun.  We warmed up for 3 more miles.  Next we ran 4 x Yasso 800's with a 400 recovery lap after each one.  My times were:

3:25, 3:27, 3:26 and 3:26.  Right were I wanted them to be.  (My recovery laps were a little too fast.  I'll slow them down next time.)

Then we did a 2 mile tempo run.  7:34 and 7:06.  The first mile was slower because we had to stop at the light.

Then a 1.5 mile run at a 7:30 avg pace.

Then a 1/2 mile cool down back to the car.

Average pace for the last 7 miles was 7:39.

I got up at 3:45 this morning to meet my crazy running friends at Cheris' house to carpool to the race.  The race started late.  I knew it was going to be a hot one and I don't do well in the heat.  I tried to hold back a little at the start.  I'm not sure if that helped or hurt me.  My sister Angela and I passed each other back and forth up until mile 10 when she took off.  I almost caught up to her at the end.  We finished about 5 seconds apart.  I was hoping to get in the 1:34's but I just couldn't do it.  I felt pretty strong the whole race although I did have some stomach issues.  My splits according to the white mile markers were  7:15, 7:14, 13:45 (for 3 & 4), 7:23, 7:12, 7:15, 7:14, 7:28, 7:11, 8:09, 7:27, 8:15, and 7:15.

Overall it was a great race.  I was hoping for a PR but I couldn't pull it off in the heat.  I will be doing some running in the heat before St. George for sure.  It was fun to see and talk to so many friends.  Thanks Kelli for coming out and cheering us on.  You're awesome.

I met the BBK's at a church on 10100 S. and 40th W. I warmed up for 15 minutes by myself. Then ran easy for another 30 minutes with the group. We then ran fast up and down the other side of the hill in front of the temple. We did that twice and then ran West on 10400 S. and finished back to the cars. It was a crazy morning. We almost got hit by bikers and then John twisted his ankle on a big rock and couldn't run. At about 9 miles I tripped over a board and landed hard on my side. I scrapped up my palm pretty bad. The worst part is how painful my right arm is. My wrist and my upper arm are very sore. I am such a klutz. I forgot to mention on Tuesday that I rolled both ankles one after the other. So my ankles are very stiff now too. My husband keeps telling me I'm falling apart. I think he's right. Average pace for the 10 miles was 8:35.

I met up with several of the BBK's at Cheris' house at 5:00 this morning.  I misunderstood where Michelle N. wanted to meet this morning and she showed up at our Wasatch meeting place.  I felt really bad.  Luckily she found us about 3 miles into our run.  I felt really good today.  I wanted to push the pace the a little.  I ate a 1/2 a banana and piece of wheat toast with peanut butter before we started.  Then I had a gu at mile 5 and Gatorade at miles 10 and 15.   I also drank water.  The last mile was tough.  I think I would have done better with another gu.  I brought Clif Shots and they were nasty.  I usually use the Gu brand.  I couldn't stomach them after the first one.  My splits were 9:21, 9:07, 8:51, 8:45, 8:46, 9:15, 8:40, 8:11, 8:28, 8:11, 8:33, 8:04, 8:16, 7:58, 8:25, 8:42, 8:10, 8:02, 8:13 and 8:50.  Average pace 8:33.

Okay ... so guess what I ate before I ran? I am so bad!!! I ate a piece of white toast smeared in Nutella!!! I am telling you, I am so so so bad!!! :)

I met the BBK's at Bingham.  I warmed up for 3.5 miles.  Then we did a faster 2 mile run.  I tried to keep that at marathon pace (8 mm).  Then we headed to the track for 6 Yasso 800's.  My times were:

1. 3:13 (I knew this was way too fast when Peggy and Melanie were right in front of me.)

2. 3:20

3. 3:18

4.  3:19

5. 3:29 (Would have been faster, but I had to answer a phone call from my daughter during the last 100 meters.  It was her first day driving herself to school.)

6. 3:37 (I didn't have Mike there to push me on this last one.  I was done.  I shouldn't have run that first one so fast either.)

I went to bed at 9:30 last night.  I finally got 7 hours of much needed sleep.  I felt so much better today.

I recovered by running slowly for the same amount of time after each  800.

From Julie on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 17:43:00 from 174.23.49.25

Thanks Nancy and Smooth.

Teena- Sorry I've been so slow to reply. Jerry isn't going to be able to go to St. George. My youngest son has a football game and Jerry is one of the coaches. I'm staying at the same timeshare as last year on Friday. Then I think I'm staying at my Grandmas in Cedar City on Saturday and going home Sunday. I'll send you a PM. I would love to figure a time we could hang out down there.

Kelli- Thanks. You so could have kept up. You were just going the opposite direction:) I'm so happy that you are able to run. You just need to get that foot better.

Taylor got to the school at 6:36 a.m. and still had to park way down the road. It's crazy. She didn't get a permit. It's going to be a long year. Did Ashly get one?

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 03, 2009 at 18:19:13 from 71.219.97.42

Ashly goes to the tech center at SLCC every morning. They reserved 40 permits for Juniors who go to the different tech centers because at least two days a week the pretty much have to drive. LUCKY us!!! I can not believe she got up that early and still was that far out. CRAZY!

I met the BBK's at Bingham.  We warmed up for 3.1 miles.   Then we headed to the track.  We ran one more easy mile with a few speed changes on the last 2 laps.  Then it was time for 8 x 800's.  My splits were 3:28, 3:26, 3:25, 3:26, 3:28, 3:26, 3:25, and 3:25.  I recovered slowly for 500 meters between each set.  I ran the first 6 with Nancy R. and the last 2 by myself.    These were tough but I think I could've done a few more if I had too.

I really wanted to get 8 marathon paced miles in, so I talked Jerry into running with me this morning.  We met Cheris, Michelle M., Jody, Nancy R. and Alan at Cheris' house at 5:30.  We ran 2 warm up miles down to the trail.  Jerry and I took off and ran the next 4 miles just above an 8 minute pace.  There was a strong South wind.  The others weren't far behind.  We turned around and ran mostly together on the way back.  Jerry talked Jody's ear off about baseball.  I think he really enjoyed the run.  Hopefully that means he will run with us more often.  We cooled down the last 2 miles.  It was a great run.  I felt really good.  My splits were 9:11, 9:08, 8:05, 8:07, 8:06, 8:17(This mile was slower because we were on 14400 and I moved over for a few cars to pass.), 7:49, 7:49, 7:27, 7:47, 8:37 and 9:11.

I stayed at the condo again the night before the race.  I had a great time hanging out with the girls.  We made our own pasta dinner.  It was yummy.  I took 3/4 of an Ambien at about 10:00 and slept great until the alarm went off at 4:00 a.m.

As soon as we got to the start, we got in line for the Port-A-Potties.  The lines were not moving.  We were still about 3 people away when the gun went off.  I was so bumbed we didn't get to start with the 3:30 pace group along with Dean and Jody.

I started with Angela and Michelle.  Michelle decided to hold back after the 1st mile.  I ran with Angela until mile 11.  She was having some tummy problems.  I waited for her twice, but by the 3rd time I decided I'd better just keep on going.

I felt really good.  I wanted a 3:30 so bad.  The slower first two miles put me behind and I never could made up that time.  I am little disappointed with my time but it was still over a 4 minute PR.   The best part of the whole race was that I didn't have to stop to go to the bathroom even once.  That's never happened before.  I even had a negative split by over 2 minutes.

My splits were 8:46, 8:24, 7:44, 7:42, 7:46, 8:21, 7:26, 8:46, 8:33, 8:14, 8:26, 8:38, 7:41, 7:44, 7:29, 7:41, 7:35, 8:01, 8:08, 7:53, 7:36, 8:07, 8:05, 7:56, 8:21 and 8:34.

I took a gu miles 5, 11, 17 and 21.  I drank gatorade at the other stops.

It was so great to hang out with everyone after the race.  It was a fun day.

What a beautiful morning for a run.  There was snow on the trees and on the ground, but the roads and trail were dry.  I ran from home down to the end of the trail and back.  At mile 4 I stopped to tie my shoe.  Just then I got passed by a lady.  I had to prove to myself that I could keep up with her.  I stayed about 100 yards behind her for the next 5 miles.  When I finished, I felt like I had just run a race.  Average pace 8:29.

Met the BBK's in Herriman.  Kelli and Scott were in charge.  Now I know why they are so good at hills.  After the warm up we regrouped back at the church.  I ran then next several miles with Walter, Scott and Dean.  There was no way I could keep up with them on the monster hill and I fell behind.  It was a great run.  Thanks Kelli and Scott for planning it for us.  Average pace 8:23.   Not bad with all the hills.  My fastest mile was in the low 7's.

Thanks Jody. I really have missed you. It's been so hard getting out of bed on the days I don't meet up with the group. I hope you run with us soon.

That is an AWESOME pace!! Nice job! I was looking at Scott's splits and I was so impressed with how fast you guys were running today. I am not sure how that second part of the run got long---it was only 6 miles when we ran it last week. Hmmm.....maybe I am losing it.

Very nice run!! I am so so so bad at hills, so I avoid them, which obviously is an ugly vicious cycle that I need to break!

Each time I see your pic I want to put Santa hats on you and Michelle and snowflakes in the background! :)

Miss ya!

Teena- I wish I had known you were there too. I just read your race report. Your kids did such a great job. I ran with my daughter too. At first her plan was to stay with me and then beat me at the finish. About a mile in she decided I was too slow and left me in her dust. I was so proud of her. Do you have anymore races planned?

I ran in the St George Expedition 50 mile relay.  It was a blast.  Our team was called The fast, fabulous and frivolous.  On our team was Cheryl, Peggy, Cheris and Michelle.  This was my first relay and I loved it.  I ran legs 2 and 10.  I was very nervous to be the final runner but we had a good enough lead that it didn't even matter.  We finished an hour before the next all women's team.  My first leg was mostly uphill.  It was only 2.4 miles and my pace was 7:22.  My second leg was 6.7 miles.  The last 1.5 miles had a steady uphill climb.  Average pace for that leg was 7:44.  I would definitely do this race again.

Met the BBK's at the Riverfront park.  We ran lots of loops around the neighborhoods.  My hubby Jerry came and ran with us today.  I always love when he runs with us.  The air was yucky and I've felt it in my chest all day, but it still beats running on the treadmill.  Average pace 8:48.
